Harold Newton / Oil on Masonite / Early Painting

30 x 35 (with frame)

Harold Newton (1934-1994) Florida Highwaymen Painting. Oil on Upson - signed lower right. Executed in combined brush and palette knife. An exceptionally early and historically important Harold Newton. This early work exudes the feel of a Backus storm scene and boasts an original Backus frame as documented in "Tropical Light" book. Presumably this is a Master / Student development piece. Inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame in 2004, Newton’s work hangs in numerous notable collections around the world and is part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture and the U.S. Department of State’s prestigious Art in Embassies program.
